Zara Dholiya Dhol ute Daga lain oye
Hath rakh kan ute boli tun pain oye
Ful khidiya sab de man bhaunda
(Hey the man with the DHOL, beat it , and sing the song, that as a flower is loved my everyone same way let my PUNJAB be loved to , let is live forever)

I remember the time when Punjab the state was one of the most rich state, it was supposedly the state which fed the whole of the country .. But over the years things have changed drastically.. first the terrorism and now the polictical Actually hold on let me rephrase that

The state of punjab was always given a Step motherly treatment by the centre govt. I am sure no one can deny that.. look what that has done to this state.. then the terrorism happen which took us so many years behind , A whole generation of punjabi youth was finished , disintegrated in those years.. the after math of that we are still feeling and some of us are living the horror.

The Government these days is only busy in filling there own coffers, no one has time for that man, The man who gets up early morning no matter what the weather is like rainy, chilly, hot … He gets up to go and tend to his farmland, his animals.. a Typical day in the life of a farmer .. I know because i have done it .. been there ..worn the tee 🙂

Get up at the first light of about 4:30/5 in morning , It a different story that if you did not get up the village Gurudwara’s granthi made sure you get up when he started with his daily routine on the Speakers..
Go to the fields to take a round , by the time you got back the ladies in the house had the fire burning, stoves ready .. getting the food ready .. Breakfast would be a Big Mug full of Lassi, with Paranthas… and off to fields .. Tilling the land, sowing the seeds, watering the fields , etc etc a non stop day of work .. work and more work.. with little respite from weather.. sun shinging hard and mighty .. or the winter chill going right inside to the bones .. Feet went numb when watering the fields in the middle of the night …

But all that was worth  the hardship when the first green leaf appeared from the soil .. but that also meant the problems start not one but so many of them …

Typically it is like ,

kadi motor sad gayi
kadi bor khad gaya
kadi paindaa soka
kadi sab kuch had gaya
Meaning that either the Motor to the tube well burnt cause of the fluctuations in electricity, you get that fixed then there would be a problem with the tubewell itself.. Sometimes the water level would go down , with no water or there was  draught like situation… OR it would rain so much that there is excess of water  and we get floods…
The farmer has no other way then go and get a loan from the bank, and hope that next season things will be different, with a bumper crop he can get rid of the loan, and earn some money.. the whole life cycle starts all over again .. but its the same outcome and this time

kishtaan bank diyaan tut gayina
saari duniya da anndata
oh saunda bhukha bhana

And now the he has not been able to pay the installment also… So now he has has no crop, plus a defaulter with the bank.. he sleeps hungry the one who feeds the whole nation..

jatt di joon buri
tadap tadap mar jana
ridak ridak mar jana

Farmers have a bad life, they are going to die one day struggling..
This is the sad story of our farmers , if all goes well then the natural calamities takes over, diseases to the crops

paigi narme nu sundi
ganaa sukiya
das hun ki kariye
munda wehla kudiyaan jawaan hoiyaan
kehde khoohe dub ke maariye
mar mar jiun naalo taan changa hai iko din mar jana

Cotton (narma) has been attacked by american worm, sugarcane(ganna) has dried .. What can he do ..
His son is jobless, no work .. and daughters(kudiyaan) are grown now. they have to be married soon .. Which well can he throw himself down to die, thats why they think that its better to die then live like this every day …
jatt di joon buri
tadap tadap mar jana
ridak ridak mar jana
What is going to happen to our farmers(jatt), not just in punjab but everywhere its the same story .. We who live in the cities take everything for granted, do we sit for once and think about those who are actually providing for us, We go to a shop and buy the stuff with our money, the money which we MAY have earned after working hard.. but just imagine the plight of that farmer who is working so much harder then us, so we can eat, Yet he does not get what is due to them
Why dont we have the guts to ask the question, we are arguing over stupid things , spending hours on useless things, Wake up people All this development that we keep barking about, is not good if the backbone of our country is broken and FARMERS are those backbone of our great nation… we need to ask this question
Sadiyan Fasllan Da
Kahto Launde Mul Vayapari

We do all the work, get the grain to the market then why does someone else put a price tag on our work.

Lets tell the Government

fasallan te sapriyaan de pithan te pump tikke ne
is waari holi te patan nahin kine jatt vike ne
hathyar hi sute haje chalaune nahin aseen bhule
raflaan diyan nalaan de rakhe ne muh haje tak khule
jit ke ja waddi hai kithe thagan di toli

(We carry the weight of the pumps holding the fertilisers and sprays on our backs..
This holi season god knows how many more farmers have sold themselves
We might have thrown our WEAPONS (hathyaar).. But we have not forgotten how to use(chalauna) them
We have kept the mouth of our RIFLES (raflaan) open
Where do these THUGS go after winning the elections)

But what can I say when we ourself have cultivated these thorns in our life and given them permission to bleed us, kill us  for the next five year…

All lyrics are taken from songs sung by punjabi singh Babbu Mann..

The last time i visited my village we had a game of cricket at 5am in morning some pics..

Vaisakhi is one of the most significant days in Sikhism, It was this day in 1699, that the Khalsa was established.

I was at the Gurudwara sahib where some religious teacher was telling that When Guru Tegh Bahadur the ninth guru of sikhs was publicly beheaded by the Aurangzeb, the Mughal ruler. (Aurangzeb wanted to spread Islam in India, He was forcibly converting hindus to islam, So the Hindus got together and came to Guru Tegh Bahadur for help. and Guru Tegh Bahadur stood up for the rights of Hindus, the Mughals therefore saw him as a threat. Guru Teg Bahadur offered his life for the freedom of Hindus)

Thousands of people had gathered to see it , when the beheading took place it was chaos there, a sudden sand storm came, No one stood up to claim the body of the fallen Guru. But Bhai Jetha who was from a lower class, took advantage of it and managed to get the severed seesh (head) of Guru Tegh Bahadur to Anandpur sahib to Guru ji’s family. So when Guru Gobind Rai, then a child asked Bhai jetha how many sikhs were there, Bhai Jetha could not reply because of the chaos, sand storm and since everyone looked the same .. That is when according to this religious teacher the Guru who would become the 10th Guru of Sikhs Guru Gobind Singh, Said he would do something that a SIKH is recognised amongst millions…

and then in 1699 KHALSA was created and the 10th Guru became Guru Gobind SINGH from Guru Gobind RAI…

on March 30, 1699 hundreds of thousands of people gathered at Anandpur Sahib for Vaisakhi and Guru’s blessing, Guru Gobind Rai came out of the tent carrying an unsheathed sword. He gave a powerful speech to infuse courage amongst fellowmen. At the end of the speech he said that every great deed was preceded by equally great sacrifice and demanded that anyone prepared to give his life come forward. On the Guru’s third call, a young man offered himself. The Guru took the man inside a tent and reappeared alone with a bloodied sword. Guru Gobind Singh asked for another volunteer. This was repeated another four times until a total of five Sikhs had gone into the tent with the Guru. Everyone present was worried and though that Guru Gobind Singh has killed five Sikhs. At this point Guru presented all the five men before the people. Every one present was surprised to see all five men alive and wearing turbans.

These five men were called Panj Piara or ‘Beloved Five’ by the Guru. He then proclaimed that the Panj Pyare would be the embodiment of the Guru himself:

“Where there are Panj Pyare, there am I. When the Five meet, they are the holiest of the holy.”

And so, as it was carried out on that historic day, the ceremony of Pahul continues to this day. The Guru regarded the Panj Piaras as the first members of the Khalsa and the embodiment of the Guru himself. With the constitution of the Panj Pyare the high and low castes were amalgamated into one as among the original Panj Pyare, there was one Khatri, shopkeeper; one Jat, farmer; one Chhimba, calico printer; one Ghumar, water-carrier; and one Nai, a barber. The Guru gave the surname of Singh (Lion) to every Sikh and also took the name for himself. From Guru Gobind Rai he became Guru Gobind Singh. This was seen as a great step in national integration because society at that time was divided on the basis of religion, caste and social status.

Guru Gobind Singh also bestowed on Khalsa, the unique Sikh identity. He directed Sikhs to wear five K’s: Kesh or long hair, Kangha or comb, Kripan or dagger, Kachha or shorts and a Kara or bracelet. Guru Gobind Singh also discontinued the tradition of Gurus and asked all Sikhs to accept the Granth Sahib as their eternal guide. He urged them to come to him with their hair and beard unshorn to get baptized by the sword, and So the KHALSA was Born ..

Punjab- Mera Punjab

Posted: November 4, 2009 in India, Mera Punjab, Punjab

A week ago I got a phone call at 3AM in morning , My maasi had called him up.. and We know how it is when the phone rings so early, I got up picked the phone up

“Hello Hello”.. and the other side was “HEllo Hello” ( Why is it like this when we have a phone call its hello hello .. )

“Tyari Kar Lao.. February, Guggu da viyah haiga”.. (Get your stuff ready for February its a wedding)

Yeah I know sense of TIMING.. in India it was 8:30 in morning so its 8:30Am everywhere, I have told numerous times but no use… Anyway after the initial excitement well there’s not mine I am still drowsy, sleepy and thinking I need to sleep.. I put the phone down and GUESS WHAT ..

I can’t sleep now all those beautiful memories come flooding back to me, The good old days as they call them.. Every Summer holidays 16th May to 2nd or 3rd August, were spent in my village in Punjab. mmmmmmmmmm the freshness still very FRESH in my mind.. Our Village is situated at a very unique location, and our house is in our fields just on the outskirts of the actual village.

It has the Two rajasthan feeders running about 800Mtrs to the right of our house, there is a small canal which passes through our village, that is just there in front of the main door, it used to be kacha first now they have made it concrete (I hate it cause one of the things we did was take our domestic animals cows, buffaloes, ox etc etc for a drink to it.. and Jump in the water ourself , Now we cant do it)

It was so good to be there, The openness, I was a spoilt boy then cause i had come from chandigarh and it was like i have come from a foreign place, Any house you went to offered me Milk, Then the horrific time during the terrorism days, I remember one day My dad had come back home , he walked up to me, asked me to go to the barbers to get my hair cut off, cause punjab police at that time was targetting sikh youth picking them up , killing them in false encounters, luckily my grand-dad intervened stopped me doing it.

But in those days too the punjabiyat in punjabis did not get less, the whole village was one, there was nothing like a hindu house or a sikh house, I remember going to everyones house all the time getting glasses of Milk to drink, GUD (dont know the english word for it) , then a roti mashed with Desi ghee and lots of Shakar in it called choori..

Its funny remembering all those times ,we say we have advanced so much now in our village we have Phone lines, Internet has come to the school, Pakka roads, Electricity and Clean water .. This has all arrived over the few years .. But that LOVE, AFFECTION, CARE has somewhat diminished , gone down to a large scale..

People i guess have become more busier, no one has any time for each other, Gone are those days when My nana ji use to take me along with him to the centre of the village where a lot others were sitting playing cards, chess etc.

The pride in showing off the pair of OX or the pride with which a tractor was kept, washed daily , has paved way to the new SUV’s, the Prado’s. All this advancement is great but where has that LOVE Gone.. I still visit the houses i visited when i was a child but the only difference is now i am asked “CHAH Piyenga” .. the forcing of glass of milk, watching me finish the glass has gone. No more choori…

At night the menfolk would get together burn a fire during winters , we would pull the CHOLIYA ( green chick peas) plants and put them on fire, this would roast the pods of peas they were delicious.. Now we got TV so we sit indoors watching some stupid program coming.

I go back now , to meet people many of them are not at home, they have gone to cities for work, Sometimes i ask who will do the farming if all are going out.

It WAS so good, I remember One time when i got a Slap from my grand-dad, he has never slapped me ever but i remember this one, I don’t know whats it called in english but there use to be this bush of tall grass like , which use to be cut and then the upper layer of the shoot use to be peeled off, it was then braided to make ropes etc, the part of the shoot that was left use to have a hole in middle it was hollow, I was growing up seen a few films , hero’s smoking without thinking I went behind the house lit the shoot and tried to PUFF in the smoke .. to my horror it was not that good also to my bad luck my grand-dad had seen it, he walked over to me I got a slap so hard I remember it to this day.

These days parents are not bothered what there kids is doing.. so many youngsters have take to smoking …

Oh How i long to be there to eat the Makki di roti with sarson da sag,
the permutations and combinations Tactics made to how to go into the sardar Ram Singhs land where he had a field of sugarcane, How to go in there get the GANNE , without being caught…

How to go unnoticed to the BERI that was in Maghar Baaji’s land to collect all the BER to eat… Get the Oranges … WE were typical RAMBO’s camouflaged..

The jumping into the rivers for a dip then getting out, applying all that mud on our bodies , laying in sun till it dried then jumping off, Now people spend so much for a face uplift , wake up people we did it for free on the banks of the rivers ha ha ha ha

I can go on and on ..
