I am not a big fan of Bollywood movies because I feel that many of the films made are a rip off from Hollywood or other movies.

But I just happened to watch UDTA Punjab , I could not understand what the whole controversy was , why it was being asked to be banned, maybe it is true when people say TRUTH hurts.. Punjab is in such dire straits , god knows how the most prosperous state at one time in the country will regain the lost glory.

One of the songs in that movie is a beautiful song, written by the famous punjabi poet , Shiv kumar batalvi. As is with many writers they become well-known only when they are no more, Shiv kumar also was one, he had  lots of ups and downs, Wikipedia has all the information about the poet.

I don’t like when the new era musician and composers try to give their own mark to old classicals. BUT THIS one is a must listen .. what beautiful lyrics by the maestro. Wish the Full song was Sung, rather than a few lines..

Ik kuddi jida naa Mohabbat,
Gum hai Gum hai Gum haiIk kuddi jida naa Mohabbat,
Gum hai Gum hai Gum hai
A girl named love
Is lost, is lost, is lost
Soorat usdi  pariyaan vargi

Seerat di o Mariam lagdi

An angel by face like

MARY by virtue

Hasdi hai taan phul jhaddade ne

Turdi hai taa gazal hai lagdi.

Flowers blossom when she laughs

Seems a poem when she walks

Lamm-salammi, saru de kad di

Umar aje hai marke agg di,

Par naina di gal samajhdi

 Tall like cypress

Age barely alight

Yet she understands the language of a glance

Saad muraadi, Sohni phabbat
Gum hai Gum hai Gum Hai
Simple,  Beautiful
she is Lost

After a long long time there has been a punjabi song that has actually touched my heart because otherwise the punjabi singers today in punjab have actually brought only disrepute to the beautiful language .. But that is for another post ..

This Song is also a dedication to Someone Out there in the wide open world, to the one Whom I loved and Lost, she was and IS Saad Muraadi, Sohni but is definitely LOST.. .. For you

Zara Dholiya Dhol ute Daga lain oye
Hath rakh kan ute boli tun pain oye
Ful khidiya sab de man bhaunda
PUNJAB MERA RAHE WASDA

(Hey the man with the DHOL(drum), beat it , and sing the song, that as a flower is loved by everyone same way let my PUNJAB be loved to , let it live forever)

I remember the time when Punjab state was one of the most rich state, it was supposedly the state which fed the whole of the country .. But over the years things have changed drastically.. first the terrorism and now the political .. Actually hold on let me rephrase that.. The state of Punjab was always given a Step motherly treatment by the centre govt. I am sure no one can deny that.. look what that has done to this state.. (carved three states from one state),  then terrorism happened which took us so many years behind , A whole generation of Punjabi youth was finished , disintegrated in those years.. the after math of that we are still feeling and some of us are living the horror.

The Government as usual is only busy in filling their own coffers, no one has time for that man, The man who gets up early morning no matter what the weather is like rainy, chilly, hot … He gets up to go and tend to his farmland, his animals.. a Typical day in the life of a farmer .. I know because I have done it .. been there ..worn the tee 🙂

Get up at the first light of about 4:30/5 in morning , It a different story that if you did not get up the village Gurudwara’s granthi made sure you get up when he started with his daily routine on the Speakers..

Go to the fields to take a round , by the time you got back the ladies in the house had the fire burning, stoves ready .. getting the food ready .. Breakfast would be a Big Mug full of Lassi, with Paranthas… and off to fields .. Tilling the land, sowing the seeds, watering the fields , etc etc a non stop day of work .. work and more work.. with little respite from weather.. sun shining hard and mighty .. or the winter chill going right inside to the bones .. Feet went numb when watering the fields in the middle of the night …

But all that was worth  the hardship, when the first green leaf appeared from the soil .. It also meant the start of problems –  not one but so many of them …

Typically it is like either the Motor to the tube well burnt cause of the fluctuations in electricity, you get that fixed then there would be a problem with the tubewell itself.. Sometimes the water level would go down , with no water or there was  draught like situation… OR it would rain so much that there is excess of water  and we get floods…

The farmer has no other way then to go and get a loan from the bank, and hope that next season things will be different, with a bumper crop he can get rid of the loan, and earn some money.. the whole life cycle starts all over again .. but its the same outcome and this time he has not been able to pay the instalment also… So now he has no crop, plus a defaulter with the bank.. he sleeps hungry the one who feeds the whole nation. Farmers have a bad life, they are going to die one day struggling..

The loan gets passed on to family members who are left behind after the death of the person who took the loan.

If the crop gets a decent start then the new age diseases take over, Nature plays havoc.. Chet Singh says the rent of the land was Rs 50,000 per acre and Gurjeet had sown cotton there. “Weeks after Gurjeet’s death, whitefly ate up the cotton crop; Rs 14,000 per acre were spent to raise the crop and Rs 8,000 per acre has come as compensation. The debt still stands.”

His son is jobless, no work .. and daughters are grown now. they have to be married soon .. Which well can he throw himself down to die, that’s why they think that its better to die than live like this every day, Why did this Farmer kill himself Hour before his daughter was to get Married

What is going to happen to our farmers, not just in Punjab but everywhere its the same story.. We who live in the cities take everything for granted, do we sit for once and think about those who are actually providing for us, We go to a shop and buy the stuff with our money, the money which we MAY have earned after working hard.. but just imagine the plight of that farmer who is working so much harder than us, so we can eat, Yet he does not get what is due to them.

We the people of a great nations are arguing over stupid things , spending hours on useless things, We need to Wake up, All this development that we keep barking about, is not good if the backbone of our country is broken and FARMERS are those backbone of our great nation.

So many farmers are committing suicides these days because of the intense pressure they are living under, it is sad. Every day there is a new story that gets published which tells a horrific story.

The Tribune is doing one such series, I have put links to some of there posts and it is heart rendering. The Tribune series on suffering families of farmers in Punjab who have committed suicide has evoked tremendous response from readers, many of who have expressed a wish to extend help. To facilitate contact with the families, they have given the names and phone numbers of the persons mentioned in the stories, or contacts in their families.

BUT A PIECE OF ADVICE TO ALL WHO WANT TO HELP, PLEASE DON’T GIVE TO CHARITIES OR RELIGIOUS BODIES OR POLITICAL BODIES AS ALL THAT MONEY NEVER REACHES THE NEEDY.  IF SOMEONE WANTS TO HELP CONTACT THE PEOPLE DIRECTLY.

The SGPC which is a SIKH Religious body has so much money in its account , yet I have never heard any of it being used to save a life of a farmer.

The last time I visited my village we had a game of cricket at 5am in morning some pics..

The recent events in Punjab (India) have been shocking and heart breaking. It is really sad to hear all the news that is going on. Why in their sane brains will Someone do what they are doing. There seems to be a very deep and meticulously planned conspiracy behind the sordid acts of blasphemy. Torn pages of Guru Granth Sahib ji, The holy book and Guru of Sikhs are being found daily.

It is Such a Shame for Each citizen of the country especially those who go around talking of equality and India rising that such incidents are still part and parcel of our country, How can any sane person say that India is shining.

I don’t care who is doing all this or which political party is behind this atrocity, All Separatists agencies have an agenda, The Government especially the one in Power has its own agenda, I guess they Both want Citizens to stay focus on everything other than economics, rights and prosperity. What is more painful is that the police is a mere spectator and does not seem to have a CLUE what is going on. I can understand that the BADAL government is probably not interested in sorting this because it helps them tremendously blaming all the events on to the opposition party, But then the Badal govt has never ever done anything for the good of the state or religion. They have always been interested in their own.

Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal party is not only a political party but is also a religious party, So can a leader stay a leader on just MORAL grounds.

How can another religious faction desecrated the Sikh scripture and that too in Public, without the knowledge of Government, either the intelligence agencies in the state are a waste of space of the Govt itself is Highly Stupid. I dont see any other reason.

To make matters worse when a peaceful protests was organised they got marred with police opening fire on them, which left a couple dead and many injured and then to top it the Govt. Calls in the Indian Army and orders a media blackout, We are still in a Democratic Country HELLO.

This all brings back the memory of the dark days of terrorism, 1984. It seems to be history repeating itself and that too in a mere 30 year turnaround, exactly same scenarios took place then, the desecration and sacrilege of the Holy book.  We all know what happened then and how NOT A SINGLE person has ever been sentenced for the atrocities committed inspite of knowing who they are, Which in itself is so SHAMEFUL and a Blot on Indian history.

The little media coverage that is out there further is more appalling and difficult to know what the true situation is , rumours are flying around like a bushfire, yet all the GOVT and OPPOSITION can do is blame each other for political mileage.  I am sure IF the govt has nothing to hide then why a censorship on Media, Look what happened to minorities in the countries where censorship was imposed

I found the following lines so very true to my heart

Hasenge hasayenge Jag ko hasaane waale

Baat ka batangad banalete hain zamaane waale

Sharm ki baat kahoon Yaan Dharam Ki baat kahoon

EK hi Jaise hain mandir aur Masjid Ko girane waale

People will laugh At and With those who make you laugh

People make a mountain out of a molehill

If I talk of religion-culture-race anything

They are all the Same WHO bring down a Temple or a Mosque or a Gurudwara

The following song is sung as a tribute to Dulla Bhatti, he is the central character of most Lohri songs , He was regarded as a hero in Punjab as he besides robbing the rich, would rescue girls being forcibly taken to be sold in slave market during the reign of Mughal Emperor Akbar. He would then arrange their marriages to boys of their religion with rituals and provide them with dowries. So every other Lohri song has words to express gratitude to Dulla Bhatti.

Lohri is celebrated as the Harvest festival in punjab, wheat is ripening and is turning golden.. soon it will be cut the grain taken and the farmer will take it to be sold for the rest of the nation to fill their bellies ..

Sunder mundriye Hoye Oh beautiful one like a ringlet one
Tera kaun wicahara hoye!

Dullah bhatti walla hoye

Dullahe ne dhee vyayae hoye!

Who will save you poor one (to a rescued girl)

Dullah Bhatti is here for you (He rescued the girls who were abandoned and rejected after kidnap!)

He married off his daughter (the rescued girls were adopted by him as his daughters)

Ser shakkar payee hoye!

Kudi da laal pachaka hoye!

Kudi da saalu paatta hoye!

Salu kaun samete!

He gave a measure (ser about a kilo)of sugar!

The girl is wearing bridal red dress!

But her shawl is torn (poor and soiled-girl has been raped?)!

Who will stitch her shawl(repair her reputation)?!

Mame choori kutti!

zamidara lutti!

Zamindaar sadaye!

The maternal uncle made sweet ghee bread (choori)! (maternal uncles were responsible to vouch for chastity of the girl)

The landlords ravished it (meaning the girl kidnapped by rich moghul landlords!)!

bade bhole aaye!

Ek bhola reh gaya!

Sipahee pakad ke lai gaya!

Sipahee ne mari eet!

Lots of innocent guys came (poor grooms)

One innocent boy got left behind (the poorest of poor!)

The soldiers arrested him! (Indicated that he was in collusion with Bhatti the rebel)

The soldiers hit him with a brick! (tortured him)

Sanoo de de lohri te teri jeeve jodi!

Pahenve ro te pahnnve pit! “

Give us lohri (gifts) ..long live you couple!

Cry or howl!

13th January Lohri day… I would have got up early… worn nice new clothes… met up with my friends and then house to house… singing the above song demanding some gift. We would get money or sweets… Money usually…Imagine the beat of the DHOL… with a group of people singing the above song, the bhangra included…

The house that gave money was blessed by US by

“Dabba bharaya leera da”
“Ai ghar ameera da”

The house that did not got

“Hukka bhai Hukkaa”
“Ai ghar bhukka”

My grandfather would give me the traditional 500Rs and my sisters 500Rs, and my sister would always give her share to me… so I would have a 1000 to start with… the other one is a miser and doesn’t love me that much ch ch ch ch 😦 So she keeps her money.

My dad is a miser he would not give :), mum would give though depending on how much she has… I bet if mum was not at home a lot of the above Hukka bhai hukka was sung in front of our house he he he … I am just kidding

Then neighbours, The house on the left an old lady lives, She would have a bowl full of sweets ready, I will go and ring her bell, she would say “KHULA HAI” (its open).. Then a crisp 100Rs note and a bowl of sweets and TONS AND TONS OF WISHES, blessings…

The neighbours on the right now this is a tussle, because they have two sons, a year younger than me , the tussle is no one wants to go first because its POLITICS .. Yes … religion main bhi POLITICS hai (even religion has politics)… look the ones who go first will get money so the other set of parents will have to match it… So it’s always hoping they go first so we can tell my dad to give bit more to them… hence we get the same when we go to their house… Yeah you see POLITICS works everywhere 🙂

The house right opposite us, were one of those misers too, hardly saw lights on in that house, I think the owners were in states, only a caretaker was there.. So nothing from there…

By then it would be college time, oh yes holiday-no holiday, festival – no festival, College is a must… and why not cause everyone in the group will be there so meeting up time, meet up then the planning starts how to go about celebrating it, first sukhi’s , then vikrams, then mine and so on.. Evening comes we go for a gedi first in different parts of the city people have organized things, visit them have some fun… a few drinks here and there… Then reach home, Dad always had a big BIG pile of wood… (On second thoughts I think that’s why he did not give money he is saving all that to buy all this wood, or ordering the poor maali (gardener) to break some from the trees 🙂 ah well Now I know )

Lit the fire, have the dholi beat the dhol… dance around the fire eat the sweets The gachaks, Rewadi’s , nuts , next door neighbours would come a few other friends make a night out of it .. Dancing- singing … then once exhausted just sit around the fire till late in night just chatting…

Oh Sunder mundriye hoye!
Tera kaun wicahara hoye!
Dullah bhatti walla hoye!
Dullahe di dhee vyayae hoye!
Ser shakkar payee hoye!

HAPPY LOHRI EVERYONE…. Have a blast .. EAT – DRINK and BE MERRY… Enjoy

HAPPY LOHRI . and dont forget my LOHRI… ..
