October 1984 was the day when humanity , brotherhood went for a six in a country which boasted of being the biggest democracy and even bigger in diversity. Its been 27 years now to the day when the mobs were given free hand to do as they please in the wake of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s assassination, the mob whose one target was to find a Sikh and kill.. neighbours became foes. People who were there with you, for you in thick and thin before that day, The ones who boasted of friendship.
That massacre raises a lot of SERIOUS questions about the autonomy of law and order machinery, It all went for a six in those three days. Human rights had no meaning. Then came another Blow , that too from a chosen leader who supposedly was educated and intelligent , Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, He had the audacity to say in his first public meeting that such things happen or are caused by the fall of a mighty tree , Instead of condemning it all it seemed he likened the carnage.
In the Drama that has unfolded over the years, lots of govts. came and went , each promising justice but that has never come I mean barely 10-15 people have been convicted for murders committed , the official death toll was 2,733 .. Where is the logic behind all this. How can this be justified ?
Does this not cast a poor reflection on the integrity of India’s criminal justice system ?
There has not even been a condolence motion to the victims of the 1984 carnage, the human rights in this country has suffered a terrible setback, Such is the disdain displayed by the highest institutions of India, If such are the deals meted out to the people of this country what can we expect the country to do in case of foreign criminals doing the same to us in our own country.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh himself acknowledged in Parliament years ago that despite official inquiries into the 1984 carnage, “We all know that we still do not know the truth, and the search must go on.”
How is it possible, No wonder the indian people are loosing faith in their own country . When other countries commemorated the 25 years of the bloodshed, India was still quiet as they were too wary of the fact that if any sort of Commemoration is done for the victims, it would be an insult to Indira Gandhi.
Is her Murder bigger then the Murders of (Official numbers) 2,733?
Even when we were under the RAJ, The british publicly condemned General Dyer for taking the action against the innocent in Jallianwala Bagh, , a Public committee called “HUNTER COMMITTEE” was created, it was endorsed by the house of commons in UK, and Dyer was removed from the army unceremoniously. But India as a country could not do so, HAS NOT DONE SO, in spite of 27 long years gone by. So much so that Independent India has FAILED To measure up to the benchmarks set even by the Raj.
All this has done is give the communal parties a big thumbs up, well we all know that these are the parties that organised the killings of Muslims in Maharashtra in 1993 and Gujarat in 2002.
We talk of Equality but is there any equality, when there is so much Indifference towards the minorities, I mean if Sikhs can suffer this, imagine what would a Dalit in an obscure village feel.
What does that tell us about the mentality of the citizens who are still voting for those tainted ministers , I remember the words used by our neighbour in Chandigarh, In those days when the elections took place, She came over to our house and categorically shouted “VOTE PAO HATH NU”.. as the hand was a symbol for congress then and this was the neighbours with whom we had lived since I was born. With whom we were closer than our relatives. Yet when it happened there was only one reality Hindu – Sikh .. all the Love was forgotten.
To this day there are places where more proof of genocide are being discovered, even in January 2011 a place Hondh-Chillar, where 32 Sikhs were killed on November 2, 1984, was discovered in northern Haryana, and in March 2011 another place near Pataudi, was discovered. The official death toll is much higher than that.
It is sad that there are cases being fought on foreign soil against the Congress Govt, Yet no one has batted an eyelid in the country itself.
The 2011 WikiLeaks cable leaks revealed that the United States was convinced about the complicity of Indian Government ruled by the Indian National Congress in the riots, and termed it as “opportunism” and “hatred” of the Congress government against Sikhs.
I wonder what is to become of this great nation, Will the culprits ever be charged for any crime or is it that only the common will have to suffer.

Calling the British more righteous is like saying that tiger is better than lion when it comes to following non-violence!
The British have done more crimes in India than what has ever come out. They have looted this country as much as possible and killed many more people than the numbers you have put up. They did occasionally wake up and did some fake acts of Justice when public opinion in Briton went awry.
How can anyone provide justice to the millions of Soviets who died (for no reason) under Stalin? The civilized world was watching quietly when he put so many millions of people in to those dreaded confinements called concentration camps and killed them. Where did all the civilized people go when Jews were killed in millions in Nazi camps at the heart of so called civilized Central Europe?
Keeping quiet (and not helping the victims) during those testing times, is as heinous a crime as participating in the crime itself. People do realize this the hard way.

I never said British were righteous, I only mentioned that They also did something about the Massacre of innocent people at Jallianwala bagh and did something ot the one who had ordered …
Whereas in our own country OUR OWN people did this , and YET our own are trying to hush it all under the carpet Inspite of Willingly Knowing who the people are and what they did.
And lets take the latest examples even Sadaam was tried , and now this month the Serbian general is being tried , he has been arrested and will be going to court.. But these are forgeign ..
As you mentioned the british SOMETIMES woke up,, Well when will OUR leaders SOMETIMES wake up…
you mentioned Jews under NAZI’s a lot of Nazi’s officers were brought to Trail.. Can you imagine that happening in India.. EVER…
The pathetic point is the so called leaders cry foul over anything happening to them so much so if they are put a security checkup at a airport they feel they have been insulted .. what do they do in their own country ah well dare i say it ..
and yeah we have been quiet thats what we do always otherwise how can the same leaders be elected all the time inspite of knowing what they did ..

Politicians involve in Sikh riots and massacre WILL NEVER BE PUNISHED by INDIAN JUSTICE SYSTEM. Absolutely no way it is feasible. Regardless of the fact, PM and President have been SIKHS, there is no way corrupt politicians can be punished.
One more spark at some stage can bring back the old wounds and Sikhs will take their own path….After 1984 riots Sikhism established as completely separate from Hinduism anyway…prior to that Sikh considered a subset of Hindus. After 1984 riots, Sikhs have organized very well and they prepared themselves for the riots. One more event, one more trigger…there will be wide spread violence across country and possibly bigger destruction.
If government takes an action to punish the culprits to uphold, laymen are inclined to follow the law….

The president and PM well they are mere KATHPUTLI’s in the hands of the congress …
One more spark Yeah I know lets see .. all this has done is the non trust among the State that was the most hard working and the one which has done the most for this nation.. and as usual the nation has forgotten all that was done by it.
I can go on and on .. but to no avail as we can talk as much as we want end of the day it would still be the same …

so it is true that a particular sect of people were targeted ..

whether its October 1984 or any other communal riot for that matter, Such wide-scale violence cannot take place without the help of police and administration..
Unfortunately whenever such incidents take place our Police and administration, whose paramount duty is to upkeep law and order situation and protect innocent lives, give full help to rioters who in fact blindly work for the Party in power at that moment….
The most fateful thing during these riots is “friends becoming foe”… as you mentioned about the neighbors…. their behaviors during such riots is really unbelievable, but that is bcoz of the reports coming into media and the provocations from their community…. but this is really something more serious than the behavior of our Police or the administration……

I was a student in Delhi during that nightmare. There is no excuse for any killings and I really doubt if we will see the mobs and those who supported them being punished, but I hope we do.
I wish these issues were not politicized. People still do have the power to make governments answerable. I can’t understand how anybody can vote for anybody who has been involved in any killing of innocent people, but so long the world continues to excuse violence against innocent people under any circumstances, such horrendous crimes will continue.
I remember feeling at the time, that these massacres meant anybody could start hating and killing anybody anytime. People we knew to be peace loving nice humans were suddenly spouting prejudice… where did/does so much resentment come from? And in such situations in India even today, criminals know that while one murder is punishable, killings by mobs are very unlikely to be punished. In case of murders by mobs those who accompany, goad and silently watch should also be punished.

Generalization is the biggest mistake everyone does. Revenging against a whole community is insane and watching it silently from the Central is heights of irresponsibility and a open revenge. Who gives this people the rights to take a innocent life? And to design and draft such cruel and violent incidents. Even after so many year when Manmohan singh (being himself a part of them) says that the truth is still not known and ought to be searched? what the fuck – what was done all these years? Here in India Nothing can be done, Not even a small stone can be moved from its place no matter 25 years, 50 years, even after 100 years. That is the state of the society. The only thing as common man can be done is being good in self. And teach/let know our neighbours and people surrounding us that humanity still lives and it ought to be taken forward to future generations, and let not such massacres happen again in India.

Just yesterday, I was reading about the ’84 riots somewhere. It was not even allowed to be a part of our consciousness as Congress has clearly tried to erase it from our minds. Of course, in those days it never got any media coverage. It is really very, very sad what happened. I not only wish that those responsible especially the congress corporators and MPs who egged and paid the mobs be punished. But, if possible. they must be humiliated and burnt in front of their families. Because the Congress is involved, no justice can be expected. Why didn’t Manmohan Singh do something? I feel numb that the guilty are always unpunished in this country and common people like you and me suffer, lose lives, cry, grieve and move on…

As an Indian you might be knowing the political fabric in our country, it’s the same case whenever any politician or a political party commits a crime. And, I can bet you for another hundred years none will be charged and put behind bars. Nice read 🙂
Yet don’t try to dilute the goodwill which exists between different communities and religions in India by blaming the Hindu’s. Around 1000 Hindus were killed brutally by Khalistan terrorists. Its not the general public like you and me who to blame for such crimes. People with vested interests like terrorists and politicians succumbs to such malpractices.

Hi Rachit I am not diluting any community or anyone.. and neither did i say I supported Terrorists or anything .. My question was Nothing is done for so many years where ONE community was singled out to be killed .. I blamed the congress Govt for that and I am sure you will say yes to this that this was indeed at the behest of the congress. Regarding killing of hindus by terrorists then Those terrorsits were shot dead some justice was done … and YES only the innocent died and no one gave a damn about that.
The article was on the way the country works the same govt comes to power , the same leaders come to power WE know who they are then still we vote for them .. WHY
How come not a single person has been hanged for the murders where for 3 days SIKHS were targetted , singled out and then killed …
The question here is not about community or goodwill, how can one expect goodwill when no one bats a eyelid, all this is bringing the fissures the trust has gone thats what needs to be avoided and for that THe authorities need to do justice which is already very late …

Bikram, as I said justice won’t be procured in India. Also, its not only the congress but each and every political party uses such act of vandalism and communal politics. Look at the Orissa riots, Bihar, Gujarat, Maharasthra and even Punjab.
As far as people are concerned, educated people don’t vote in India, the root cause of all problems pertaining in India.

So are you saying that we should just ignore it and turn around .. and all the states you have mentioned they have one thing in common, I wont go on that though..
The problem is justice not given and till that is not given there will always be a divide and it will never be filled. The demands of Punjabi’s was genuine one if you look at history you can see how much punjab was and what it is now , and still it is the largest harvester of wheat and cotton , its not me its history inspite of terrorism and all punjab was always ahead , Yet it is not the most advanced state. and it got divided into so many parts ..
and i dont beleive this about educated people not voting THEY VOTE only when they are in the polling booth they behave Uneducated.
My topic was basicly since 1984 to 2011 nothing has been done .. nothing against religion or community or anything .. and if you say justice wont be procured well then people will have to take it and that would be termed as terrorism to some.. its a big circle and that circle needs to be broken for making our country a GREAT country

I myself did not witness that heinous crime, but my family did, and listening their experiences I feel goosebumps. These riots had led us to shift to Chandigarh from Delhi leaving everything behind and starting afresh. My grandfather used to describe these riots as another partition where they again had to leave everything and run for lives.
And its really disheartening that even after so many years, the justice has not been delivered. And about ‘haath nu vote pao’, all those who faced it are till date not in support of Congress and I guess will never be. Not until they get their due justice.,
